Room 48

Bed & Breakfast in Hida Takayama

A Traditional Japanese House Reimagined

Room 48 is a private bed & breakfast located in rural Hida Takayama, created by renovating an old traditional Japanese house that dates back to the late Edo period. Offering a guest room with a view of a garden and a magnificent lounge space with an irori (floor hearth), the building was redesigned with the help of an exceptional builder and architect of the Hida region. Existing materials such as antique floor boards were reutilized as much as possible. The exposed beams and earth wall reveal the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. And through combining locally obtained, newer materials, we created an ambience that blends tradition with originality.

The Accommodation Space

The guest room consists of two tatami rooms, a private washroom and spacious shower booth. Futon mattresses and blankets are provided for each guest, while basic amenities include air conditioners, mini refrigerator, electric kettle, coffee/tea bags, hair dryer, towels, and other items. The room also offers a view of the garden that changes its scenery according to the season. The lounge hall is also where guests can freely relax. Breakfast will also be served here.

Discovering Deep Hida Takayama

Hida Takayama has become a popular destination for travelers over the past few years. In addition to the historic town districts, there are many parts of the countryside which also have much to offer. The Kokufu area in which we are located, is comprised of several settlements that are situated in the small strips of valleys that extend to the north of the main area of Takayama. The name of our settlement is Utsue, where the nostalgic mood of rural Hida remains to this day. Within the village there are also several locations of interest such as a nature park with waterfalls, a hot spring facility, and a few locally run establishments that alike our place, have also renovated old traditional houses. The main town of Hida Takayama and Hida Furukawa, another popular town district, is within a 20 minute drive distance. We serve as a base for travelers seeking to spend time a bit further out from the center of attraction, and discover a more personal travel experience.

We are a family of four with a mixed Japanese and European heritage. Due to our background we've often served as a bridge to link Japanese and various cultures. Eventually we envisioned of creating a place that can be our home and at the same time, link people interested in traveling to and experiencing Japan. For us, Room 48 is a realization of that vision, and our hope is to be able to share our experience with as many people as possible.
